Norwegian Financial Mechanism Programme "Innovation" green "production" good practice examples in 2016
The development of Latvia is and will remain based on medium and high technology intensive industries in long term, providing support for already existing manufacturing enterprises and start-up enterprises, which are significantly improving or creating new innovative products, technologies and services. At the same time, this support approach helps to energy efficiency, reduction of emissions and provides lower consumption resources, thus increasing welfare of inhabitants of Latvia and ensuring environmental sustainability.
Public administration auditors to uptake the best practice from Norway
To raise the level of knowledge of the public administration auditors and strengthen the professional international partnership, the Ministry of Finance, as the internal audit coordinator, on 19 and 20 December organised the bilateral Latvian -Norwegian experience exchange seminar for internal auditors "Effective Governance and Efficiency Audit in the Norwegian Government Administration".
Latvia to get 102.1 million euro allocation in the new EEA/Norwegian Financial Mechanisms period
On Tuesday, December 20, at the Cabinet of Ministers meeting the informative communication on launching the official bilateral negotiations for the implementation of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Norwegian Financial Mechanisms in Latvia for the period 2014 - 2021 was reviewed. The gross allocation to Latvia during the said period of time within the scope of both financial mechanisms comprises 102.1 million euros, with approximately 20 million euros whereof being designated in accordance with the approved implementation framework (administrative costs of the Donor States, mandatory 5% reserve, fund for promotion of bilateral cooperation, technical assistance, mandatory NGO fund, etc.), whereas 80.2 million euros are to be allocated to the introduction of the investment programmes.

Well received in 30 countries, the initiative has become the world’s largest cleantech business ideas programme in only 3 years. Support from the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms Deemed Valuable by the Majority of Latvian Population
The results of the public opinion poll carried out in May and June this year on the awareness of the population on issues related to the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms show that 71% of Latvian population - internet users - consider the support provided for the development of the country by the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms as very valuable or rather valuable.

Project results presented via creative workshops

On Thursday, June 9, in the Ministry of Finance (MoF) already the fifth annual meeting of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms was held At the meeting the representatives of the MoF and other line ministries discussed the current progress of implementation of the EEA/Norwegian Financial Mechanisms programmes with the representatives of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Financial Mechanisms Office, as well as the Embassies of Norway and Iceland in Latvia.

A possibility to have a look into life history of Jews in Latvia and Norway
On October 13, in the Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum with Norwegian financial support an exhibition “Ebreji Norvēģijā un Latvijā. Negaidītās krustceles” was opened. With photos from personal archives and texts, the exhibition illustrates history of Jews in Europe telling about immigrant Jews who arrived in Norway in the period between 1851 and the Second World War.
In Olaine “laboratory of good changes” is being created
Since 2014 the mission of Latvian Prison Administration has been to execute the punishment of imprisonment by helping offenders to become socialized citizens. Although it cannot be doubted that the socially most effective indicator of prison activity is the amount of repeated crimes of the offenders who have served their sentence, the mission is brave and ambitious. Offenders are isolated from the public, but prison staff must teach them to live in society. They are brought together with other offenders, but prison staff must help them to interact positively.

"Thanks to the Norwegian financial support, now in Cēsis there is the most up-to-date juvenile correctional facility in Latvia," says Andris Pāže, Head of the Cēsis Juvenile Correctional Facility of the Prison Administration of the Ministry of Justice. "Frankly speaking, now juveniles here live better than some people on the outside."
Tourists from all over the world find a medieval feeling in Cēsis
From the very beginning the overall panorama of Cēsis has been beautified with a complex of medieval castle. In order to avoid the loss of its initial beauty over centuries and years, citizens of Cēsis with Norwegian financial support have recently replaced the roofing of the Western Tower. The out-of-date roof shingles were replaced by clay tiles. In the result, the roof of the tower regained its look as it was created in 1914 and is now open for visitors.
Electronic surveillance launched in Latvia on 1st July 2015
Latvia has been actively working on the implementation of electronic monitoring and starting from 1st July this year the first inmates will be able to apply for early release from prison sentence with electronic monitoring. The technological solution selected is the radio-frequencies-based technology to control the location of a person in a specific place, while the introduction of electronic monitoring based on GPS technology is not intended so far.
Finance Minister Janis Reirs: Latvia’s inhabitants appraise the support provided by the EEA/Norwegian Financial Mechanisms
On Thursday, June 11, in the Ministry of Finance (MoF) the annual meeting of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norwegian Financial Instruments took place. During the meeting representatives of the Ministry together with the representatives of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Financial Mechanism Office and Norwegian Embassy in Latvia discussed the implementation of EEA/Norwegian Financial Mechanisms and progress of programme implementation in 2014–2015.
