Topical issues are being discussed by the Financial Intelligence Unit during the conversation festival LAMPA 2023

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) held a discussion on sanctions issues at the Conversational festival LAMPA 2023 in the interior sector tent “Human Security” on June 10, 2023.

The discussion “How the sanction affects each of us” was chaired by Mr. Paulis Iļjenkovs, head of the FIU Strategic analysis Division, and was attended by representatives of several institutions involved in sanctions issues, including Mr. Toms Platacis, Acting head of the FIU, Ms. Sabīne Janisela, Head of the Sanctions Division of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Raimonds Zukuls, Director of Customs Administration of the State Revenue Service, Ms. Laima Letiņa, Advisor of the Financial industry Association and Ms. Marta Tilhena, Senior Supervisory expert of the Bank of Latvia anti-money laundering department.

Participants of the discussion shared the experience of the represented institutions in matters of sanctions, as well as provided an assessment of the effectiveness of the application of sanctions, discussed challenges in matters of implementation of sanctions and prevention of circumvention, as well as the future in the field of sanctions at the Latvian, European Union and international level.

FIU representative Ms. Ieva Ģerģe participated in the discussion “Young people in money mules networks – the true price of easy profit temptation”, drawing attention to the current issues related to the involvement of young people in financial crimes in the context of money laundering and fraud.

Also Mr. Svens Kristjansons, Deputy Chief of the State Police Economic Crimes Combating Department, Mr. Ruslans Grigs, Head of Cybercrimes prevention department and Mr. Artūrs Miksons, psychotherapist participated in the discussion.
