Within the framework of the EEA Grants project No. EEZ/TM/2022/7 “Strengthening of the capacity of forensic system and inspection of the site of the event”, representatives of the State Forensic Science Bureau visited the Forensic Criminalistics Laboratory of the Lithuanian Forensic Medicine Service on March 4th and 5th, 2024.
During the experience exchange program, the participants discussed the overall structure and workload of the Lithuanian forensic medicine expertise system in its various departments, the structure, workload, and methods used in the Forensic Criminalistics Laboratory, the quality management system, and laboratory equipment, including the possibilities of using various technologies in forensics. Practical training was also conducted in determining the mechanism of damage and identifying the traumatic object using experimental damage on cardboard and polyethylene film, and an insight into traceology was gained.
On the second day of the visit, the preparation of biological material for examination, anthropological examination methods, and the determination of the time of bone exposure to the external environment were discussed. Practical training was also conducted in person identification methods: age determination was carried out based on various pelvic parts using a 3D scanner and specialized computer software, and an insight was gained into person identification using the photo-superimposition method. The Center’s experts also gave a presentation on the Center’s structure, workload, and an overview of the work of the Forensic Criminalistics Laboratory.
The purpose of the visit was to increase professional knowledge and practical skills in matters related to work in the Forensic Criminalistics Laboratory, to gain insight into the work process in the Lithuanian Forensic Criminalistics Laboratory, to identify common current problems in the field and possible solutions in the future, and to establish contacts for future cooperation between experts from the Latvian and Lithuanian Forensic Criminalistics Laboratories.
