Ministry of the Interior continues co-operation with the Council of Europe within the framework of EEA Grants programme

On July 6th, 2023, Ministry of the Interior of Latvia held its 11th Cooperation Committee meeting of the EEA programme “International Police Cooperation and Combating Crime” (Programme).

The meeting was hosted by the Council of Europe, Programme’s International Partner Organisation, and opened by Mr Claus Neukirch, Director of Programme Co-ordination Directorate of the Council of Europe, emphasizing the excellent relationship that underpins the ongoing co-operation and acknowledging the accomplishments of the predefined projects within the Programme.

During the meeting, Ministry of the Interior along the Council of Europe, the Ministry of Finance, the Financial Mechanism Office, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau of Latvia and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Riga reviewed the Programme progress: strengthening cooperation between law enforcement bodies, combating and investigation of economic crime, establishing a whistle-blowing system and the development of the Barnahus model.

The day prior to the meeting, Under-secretary of State Mr Kaspars Āboliņš and Director of Programme Co-ordination Directorate Mr Claus Neukirch opened a fruitful discussion on fostering future. During the discussion, significant insights and co-operation proposals were explored to strengthen Latvia’s ability to build law enforcement capacity and address environmental crime issues.

Kaspars Āboliņš, Under-secretary of State of the Ministry of the Interior sums up the meeting: “We remain focused on the Programme progress and its main aims in close cooperation with project promoters to achieve Programme indicators. Ministry of the Interior with the support the Council of Europe continues its work towards safer and more competitive Latvia. The Council of Europe is a truly welcoming and supportive partner. We are thankful for its advice and sincere interest in the Programme. Current experience is a great base for future co-operation within the Programme and for building follow-up activities after it.”

The aim of the Programme is institutional capacity strengthening for preventing and combating economic crime in Latvia, as well as inter-agency cooperation improvement to ensure child victims of violence or witnesses of it are working in a child-friendly manner.

Total Programme contribution is 20.3 million EUR. EEA Grant contribution is 85 % or 17.3 million EUR, national contribution is 15 % or 3 million EUR.
