The Science and Education Innovation Center Approbates Non-formal Education Programmes for Teachers

On May 16, on the online platform ZOOM, the team of the Science and Education Innovation Center (ZIIC) of the Liepaja Municipal Education Department approbated the first non-formal teacher education programmes for Norwegian partners and teachers from the Jaermuseet Regional Museum.

Within the framework of the project “Development of the Innovation Centre in Liepaja City”, non-formal teacher education programmes are being developed both in the Technology co-creation place at Autoru Street 4/6 and in the Nature House. The approbation of the programmes in both co-creation spaces is a succession of experience exchange trips to Norway. The training developed by ZIIC is important for pedagogues to motivate today’s young people to pursue a career in STEM and environmental sciences, as well as to develop a greener, more sustainable worldview.

In cooperation with experts from Liepaja University, teachers’ training programme on digital production in education has been developed in the Technology co-creation space. Within two hours, the Norwegian partners from the Jaermuseet Regional Museum got acquainted with the Fab Lab concept planned by ZIIC and how the technologies contained in it can be used in the educational process, emphasizing not only the principle of operation, but also the real application in the context of educational content. The obtained analysis and feedback allow to improve the content of the training so that the programmes already implemented in August would be of high quality and with added value.

On the other hand, non-formal education programme for teachers “Ecotechnology for the Improvement of the Environmental Science Teaching Process” has been developed in the Nature House and it includes various methods for the ecotechnological teaching approach. In addition, Sintija Ozolina, a laboratory assistant and lecturer at Liepaja University, inspired teachers with demonstrations of algae processing. Teacher training will provide an opportunity to work and produce a variety of alternative materials. The project “Development of the Innovation Centre in Liepaja City” is funded by the European Economic Area and the Norway grant programme “Research and Education”.  Its total cost is EUR 986 049.00, of which EUR 754 327.40 is co-financing of the Norwegian Grants, EUR 133 116.60 is co-financed by the State budget of Latvia and EUR 98 605.00 by Liepaja City Municipality.
