Entrepreneurship will be promoted in the Riga Planning Region

On 17 June 2021, the first contract for the pre-defined project of the EEA Grants Regional Development and Cultural Cooperation Programme was signed. The Riga Planning Region (RPR) will promote the region’s competitiveness, employment and sustainable and inclusive growth.

Until the spring of 2024, RPR in cooperation with the project partner – the Westland Regional Municipality of Norway, will implement the pre-defined project “Entrepreneurship support measures in the Riga Planning Region” (Project). The total eligible costs for the project are 711 016 euros.

During the project, RPR will develop a special training programme for municipal specialists on business and economic development planning, as well as improve the platform for reflecting on current business issues in the region. This will help the municipalities of the RPR to provide better services in business support and investment attraction. The project envisages experience exchange trips to both Norway and Latvia in order to use the project implementation time as efficiently as possible to ensure the content of the training program.

“We developed the project in close cooperation with the project partners in Norway – the municipality of Westland regional level, gradually developing and detailing the descriptions of the project activities and cooperation mechanisms. Westland is a region in the western part of Norway, the largest city of which is Bergen. The region is well known for its open business environment, smart innovation system and multidisciplinary economy. The Riga planning region will have many opportunities to learn and transfer good practice from its Norwegian colleagues. ”

Ilgvars Francis, International project expert in Riga planning region

In order to promote the recognition of regional companies and cooperation between local governments, the project plans participation of RPR local governments and companies in “Entrepreneurs’ Day” events organized by other Latvian planning regions for the first time, which is one of the largest business promotion events in each region. Support measures for young people to start a business and mentoring are also planned, with a special focus on young people at risk of poverty. The project also plans business idea competitions for individuals and the opportunity to receive professional mentor support from the creation of the idea to its implementation in life.

Within the framework of the programme, specific business support measures will be implemented in other planning regions as well. The contracting will be completed in the summer of 2021.

We work together for a competitive Europe.
