Today at 23 July 2020 Dita Traidas, director of the State Education Development Agency (VIAA), and Inga Ekuze, executor of the Liepaja city Education Administration, signed an agreement on the implementation of the European Economic Area and Norwegian (EEA/N) grant project – “Development of Innovation Centre” in the city of Liepaja.

The project involves the development of the Nature House and the creation of a co-location area that will complement SEIC with modern exhibits, technology and equipment, as well as new interest education programmes.
“We must create new opportunities in the regions of Latvia to develop a progressive learning and collaborative environment that will fulfil with exciting educational programmes and lessons for children and young people in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) areas. At the same time, the development of such innovation centres opens up new forms of collaboration between general education, higher education and scientific institutions in Latvia and Norway,” stresses VIAA Director Dita Traidas.

The project will be completed over a period of three years to promote the development of knowledge of pre-primary children, pupils and teachers in STEM and environmental fields. One of the goals is to create a co-operation room, as well as an exhibition in the Nature House. For both young people and teachers, the development of the innovation centre will create new, modern and educational programmes on STEM and environmental fields to change stereotypes and perceptions of the complex sphere of science and technology.

“With the implementation of the project, we will create opportunities for citizens of Liepaja and city guests to learn environmental science in the Nature House, as well as to acquire knowledge and skills in design thinking through technically creative works. We are sure that this project will contribute to the development of the educational sector in the city, a knowing, exciting and up-to-date training environment for pupils and, at the same time, teachers will be the basis for improving knowledge and skills,” – says Inga Ekuze, executive director of the Liepaja City Education Board.

The project “Development of Innovation Centre in Liepaja City” is funded by the EEA/N grant programme “Research and Education”. Its total cost is EUR 986 049,00, of which EUR 754 327,40 is co-financed by the Norway Grants, EUR 133 116,60 – co-financed by the Latvian State budget, and EUR 98 605,00 – co-financed by the municipality of Liepaja. The municipality of Liepaja city in close collaboration between the partners involved in the project – the Tronheima Science Centre, the regional museum of Jærmuseet in Norway and the University of Liepaja, as well as other science and innovation centres in Latvia, will be the developers of the project.
