With the support of the EEA Grants, a significant contribution has been made to the field of forensic expertise in Latvia

On April 17, 2024, a closing event was held for the project “Strengthening of the capacity of forensic system and inspection of the site of the event” within the framework of the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 program “International police cooperation and combating crime”.

During the event, Raimonds Apinis, Deputy Director of the State Forensic Science Bureau (SFSB), and Kristīne Dokāne, Forensic Expert of the Department of Biological and Chemical Expertise, informed about the achievements of the SFSB within the project – the acquisition of equipment necessary for expert work, the participation of experts in trainings, seminars, conferences and other qualification improvement measures, the improvement of forensic methods in cooperation with the Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service KRIPOS, the creation of an ink sample database, as well as the enhancement of the SFSB experts’ knowledge in the application of 3D scanning technology in the investigation of road traffic accidents.

The project was implemented within the framework of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 Ministry of the Interior program “International police cooperation and crime control”. The total project funding is 2,680,000 EUR, of which 85% or 2,278,000 EUR is funded by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism, and 15% or 402,000 EUR is co-financed by the Latvian state budget.
