Latvian and Norwegian partners visit women’s prison in Ilguciems

On 11 January 2024, within the framework of the Norway grants program “Correctional Services” a bilateral visit took place in Latvia. Representatives from the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia, the Latvian Prison Administration and the Directorate of Norwegian Correctional Service (KDI) visited women’s prison in Ilguciems.

During the visit, representatives from the Ministry of Justice and correctional services staff not only acquainted themselves with the unique history, infrastructure and working principles of Latvia’s only women’s prison but also got an insight into correctional and resocialization work being conducted at the prison. During the pleasant visit, discussions took place regarding the cooperation opportunities and directions to be taken after the conclusion of Project** in Olaine ¬– the deadline for which is 30 April 2024.

On the following day, 12 January 2024, the Norwegian partners also participated in a significant event symbolising the completion of one of the significant phases in construction of Training centre at Olaine prison territory ¬– topping out ceremony (“Spāru svētki). This event symbolizes an important milestone reached with the most challenging and time-consuming construction work – a roof structure –completed. It is scheduled that the new Training centre of the Latvian Prison Administration will open its doors in 2024.
