The most significant event for professionals of correctional services is taking place in Belgium

This week, from 22nd to 27th October, in Antwerp, Belgium the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) is organising an international conference “Human Corrections: What more can we do”. The overarching theme of the conference encompasses a wide range of topics, including the sharing of experiences of different states in their efforts to provide human resocialization of inmates. The need for more compassionate and humane approach in the field of correction services, as well as the necessity to identify new and innovative ways to improve the existing system, is what brings together experts from around the world. The event serves as a platform for experts can discuss the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities within the field.

Participants will also have an opportunity to engage in discussions about innovations in correction services, the importance of family support, a modern execution of sentences, mental health issues, and the professional training of correctional services staff. Throughout the week, the conference attendees will be given an opportunity to participate in plenary sessions, working groups, discussion panels and networking events, many of which will occur simultaneously, thus providing the possibility to choose the most important one. This will provide the professionals in the field with the opportunity to learn about international experiences and thus expand their own knowledge in the area of correctional services and resocialization, whilst seeking new opportunities for collaboration. They will also have a chance to visit correctional institutions in Antwerp to learn about the best practices of the Belgian Prison Service.

Responding to a kind invitation of the donor programme partner – Directorate of Norwegian Correctional Service – representatives of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia, the Latvian Prison Administration, and the State Probation Service.

Participation in the closing conference is within the framework of the Norway Grants 2014-2021 period programme “Correctional Services” level initiative “The international cycle of conferences with participation of Norwegian and Latvian experts on issues topical for correctional services”.
