From 3 to 5 October 2023, in Opatia, Croatia, a conference is being jointly organised by the Directorate of Norwegian Correctional Service as the Norway Grants 2014–2021 programme “Correctional Services”* donor partner and the Croatian Probation Service marking the completion of the project “Strengthening human rights protection and public safety through improving capacities of the Croatian Probation Service”.

Responding to the invitation from the Norwegian partner and the Croatian Probation Service and in order to familiarise themselves with the good practice of the correctional services, including of the Croatian Probation Service, in interinstitutional cooperation and the results of the project implemented in the field of human rights and public safety, the following representatives of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia participated in the conference: Kaspars Ozols, Director of the Project Department and Agnese Kleina, Head of Norwegian Financial Mechanism Division at the Project Department. Additionally, the State Probation Service is represented by Valdis Pusvācietis, Head of Data Analysis and Development department of the State Probation Service, acting also as Chief Deputy of the State Probation Service.

The conference aims to gather professionals working in the justice sector, including probation, to discuss challenges and achievements in this area. It also serves as an opportunity to present the results and achievements of the Norway Grants project to conference attendees. The Croatian Probation Service has been a long-term co-operation partner of the State Probation Service. Several experience exchange visits and trainings have taken place several times between the two institutions. Therefore, participation in the conference provides a significant contribution to the Latvian side on the current matters in the field of probation in Croatia and Norway. During the conference, discussions were held on current trends in the field of digital technologies, including the introduction of electronic monitoring in probation everyday work, challenges related to mental health and public safety, opportunities for inter-institutional co-operation, practical approaches, and practical methods useful in the work of correctional services.

Participation in the closing conference is within the framework of the Norway Grants 2014-2021 period programme “Correctional Services”.
