Two new projects the Baltic Research Programme were launched in June

In June 2023, two contract have been concluded on the implementation of projects submitted in the restricted call of the Baltic Research Programme, which are aimed at the development of new joint research project applications for call under the programe “Horizon Europe” or other funding programme.

One of the projects ” Project development for active control of thermochemical conversion of regional biomass resources with improved quality of produced energy and increase of European climate neutrality” with a total funding of 60,000 EUR will be implemented by the Institute of Physics of the University of Latvia in cooperation with Norwegian partner – SINTEF, Estonian partner – Tallinn University of Technology and Lithuanian partner – Kaunas University of Technology. Within the framework of this project, a new ambitious, multidisciplinary project will be developed by improving the BioTech project with the aim of which is to expand experimental research creating science-based and advanced technology for syngas production and its quality control, which will be supported by advanced numerical modelling of gasification dynamics, full life cycle analysis and environmental impact assessment thus increasing the scientific value of the research. Effectively using the research synergy of the partners involved in the project from different countries of ES will significantly influence Europe’s progress towards the sustainability of energy production reducing the dependence of energy producers on centralized energy supply, the need of which has already been confirmed by events in Ukraine.

The second project ” Preparation of a joint project application on lake restoration in the Baltic states ” will be implemented by 4 partners: the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology, the Lithuanian Nature Research Centre, the Estonian University of Life Sciences, the Norwegian Institute for Water Research.  The aim of the current project is to involve researchers from all partner institutions in preparing a joint application on the overreaching topic of lake restoration planning and practical testing.  The project is on developing and testing a framework for shallow lake ecosystems restoration and sustainable management that can be further adapted and applied across the Baltic States.

The goal of the restricted call of the Baltic Research Programme is to strengthen cooperation between research organizations in Latvia, donor countries, Estonia and Lithuania in order to improve the research performance of the Baltic countries at the international level.

Project applications were submitted in the restricted call by 5 applicants of the 3rd open call of the Baltic Research Programme, whose projects are included in the reserve list. The total amount of funding requested in the project applications is EUR 277,318.75. It is planned that the approval of the programme committee for the implementation of three more projects will be received in the near future.

The Baltic research program is implemented within the EEA grant programme “Research and Education”, which is implemented in Latvia by the Ministry of Education and Science and the Latvian Council of Science.
