At the beginning of March 2023, 5 agreements have been concluded with Baltic Research Program projects for the allocation of additional funding in the amount of 150,000 euros. Until January 10 of this year, the project implementers had the opportunity to submit an amendment to the contract for receiving additional funding for the involvement of Ukrainian researchers and for the performance of additional activities under the European Economic Area financial instrument and the Norwegian financial instrument 2014-2021 program “Research and Education” activities “Baltic Research Program” ” in project implementation.
Amendments to the contract were submitted by 5 projects, for which the Program Committee approved additional funding in the amount of 30,000 euros. Three projects are expected to attract researchers from Ukraine, while 2 projects will implement additional activities.
The Riga Technical University project “Creation of new types of concrete for long-term storage and management of hazardous waste” is expected to attract doctoral students from Ukraine, who will participate in material production, mechanical testing, thermoexperimental investigation and radiation shielding modeling.
In the Vidzeme University project “Quantitative data on social and economic transformations in the regions of the three Baltic states in the last 100 years for the analysis of historical transformations and overcoming future challenges” it is planned to involve Ukrainian researchers in the creation of a statistical data depository.
2 Ukrainian researchers will be involved in the implementation of already existing project activities, collecting 30 additional examples of the use of circular resources from Ukraine in the project of the “Baltic Studies Center” foundation “Promotion of cooperation for sustainable cross-sectoral circulation of bioresources in agriculture, forestry and fisheries”. Their tasks will also be to provide recommendations for policy-making in Ukraine in connection with its accession negotiations to the European Union.
The University of Latvia project “Improving adaptation and plasticity of perennial ryegrass for safe and sustainable food systems using CRISPR-Cas9 technology – EditGrass4Food” will additionally involve a researcher who will help develop protocols for genotype-independent Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and regeneration of genome-edited plants.
In the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Center project “Physical activities as a means of breast cancer prevention: research of molecular mechanisms” it is planned to implement a new task, the aim of which is to find out which cell types in breast cancer tissues mostly respond to exercise-induced EVs.
The Baltic research program is implemented within the framework of the EEA grant program “Research and Education”, which is implemented in Latvia by the Ministry of Education and Science and the Latvian Science Council.
