On December 14, 2017 representatives from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Latvia signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Implementation of the Norway Grants in Latvia for 2014 – 2021 period.
The main objective of the Norway Grants is to reduce socio-economic disparities between the donor and recipient countries and to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
In this period, the funding available in Latvia for five programmes will be 46.02 million EUR.
For the correctional services programme “Correctional services” Norway Grant will be 13 million EUR, including an additional 100 000 EUR for bilateral activities.
In the new period as priorities were set:
– strengthening the capacity of the home affairs system;
– education, science and research;
– development of the regions of Latvia and reduction of poverty;
– environmental and climate change management;
– entrepreneurship and cultural cooperation;
– capacity building for correction services.
Within six months after the Memorandum of Understanding is signed, the ministries according to their responsibilities must prepare programme concepts or – content documents. Within six months after approval of the programme concepts Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Latvia will prepare programme agreements. After signing these agreements, implementation of the programmes will start.
