On 20 November 2024, the representatives of the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development as the Programme Operator (PO) took part at the closing event of the EEA and Norway Grants’ programme “Environment, Energy, Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy” organized by the Norwegian Environment Agency in Oslo.
At the closing event the Programme Operator presented the results achieved in Latvia within the programme “Climate change mitigation, adaptation and environment”.
In the Programme area of “Environment and ecosystems”, an integrated management system for contaminated sites has been created, and a whole process for managing contaminated sites is fully digitized. The extensive remediation works have been carried out in the Viški parish, Augšdaugava Municipality, and in the Karosta Canal of the Liepāja Port, and in the territory of the Ventspils Freeport Authority. There are significantly reduced the risks of historical pollution improving environmental condition. Several awareness raising campaigns and activities have also been implemented in these projects. As a result, communication activities and campaigns raised knowledge and better understanding about the environment and climate change, and circular economy among different target groups.
In the Programme area “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” an important contribution of the Programme relates to the updated soil data in the historical soil database and also developed soil mapping methodology and classifying Latvian soil according to the international soil classification system, as well as training soil mapping experts. This project was implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture together with several partners.
The Ministry of Climate and Energy is implemented the project which significantly improves climate change policy planning at all levels. The latest climate change scenarios and a “road map” for the implementation of the “green budget” framework were developed. Municipalities and residents living on the Baltic Sea coast can find information on the assessment of coastal erosion and developed solutions how to mitigate coastal erosion. Everyone has an opportunity to use improved tools of the hydrometeorological warning system. The developed training course contributed to the knowledge of local government specialists about climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
