The project applications for the European Economic Area and the Norway grant (EEA/N) programme “Research and Education” have been submitted by 5 universities: Riga Stradins University, Latvian Academy of Culture, University of Latvia, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies and Riga Technical University. The project call, which was open until 12 April 2021, provides mobility opportunities for students, academic and administrative staff.
In total, Latvian higher education institutions in their project applications have attracted 4 partners from Norway, 3 from Iceland and 1 from Liechtenstein. Among them, 2 project applications have been received, which plan to establish cooperation with the approved Baltic research programme projects, which increases the opportunities for receiving funding. Such cooperation increases the impact of research projects and develops the knowledge, skills and competencies of higher education students, academic and administrative staff in the field of research. 5 universities have applied for student mobility from 3 to 11 months, but 4 universities have applied for the mobility of academic and administrative staff from 1 to 4 weeks.
The State Education Development Agency (VIAA) will start the project application evaluation process in April this year. The results of the evaluation process are planned to be announced by July. Approved projects will receive funding of up to 100%, of which 15% is national co-financing and 85% is EEA/N funding. The minimum funding of the project programme is 10,000 euros, the maximum funding is 200,000 euros, and the total funding is 1,582,866 euros.
The project call is organized by VIAA in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia (MoES) and the Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Quality Improvement in the field of higher education. The manager of the EEA/N grant programme “Research and Education” is the MoES, which is responsible for the implementation of the programme in Latvia. VIAA, in its turn, as a programme implementer performs project evaluation, implementation monitoring and control. The scholarships activity contributes to higher education and research, reducing economic and social disparities in the European Economic Area, strengthening bilateral relations and promoting exchanges between donor countries and Latvia.
