5 Latvian higher education projects approved for the EEA grant scholarships

State Education Development Agency (VIAA) approved five Latvian higher education institution projects submitted to scholarship activity call of the European Economic Area and Norway Grant (EEA/N) programme “Research and Education”. Riga Stradins University, Latvian Academy of Culture, University of Latvia, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies and Riga Technical University will receive funding for the mobility of students, academic and administrative staff.

Projects with themes such as healthy ageing, welfare and social security, cooperation and gender, as well as the antimicrobial properties of cow’s and goat’s milk, aim to improve the skills and competencies of university students and staff in higher education and research. All approved projects will form international cooperation with higher education institutions in Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

The implementation of the projects will last from September 2021 till 30 April 2024. The project cost varies from 19’000 euros to 117’000 euros, while the total cost of approved projects is 269’825 euros.

Taking into account the travel and event restrictions caused by the pandemic, the changes to the regulations for the implementation of the scholarship activity approved by the government on 29 June 2021 envisage launching another scholarship activity project call in early 2022. In this call, higher education institutions in Latvia, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein will also be able to implement mobility remotely or online and in reduced terms. This will allow universities to ensure that students and staff can participate in international exchange programmes, even in the context of the Covid-19 virus. The amount available in the second call for proposals is 313’041 euros.

The scholarship activity supports the development of in-depth, research-based knowledge by improving the skills and competencies of doctoral students, master’s, bachelor’s and professional study program students, academic and administrative staff in the field of higher education and research.

The manager of the EEA/N grant programme “Research and Education” is the Ministry of Education and Science, which is responsible for the implementation of the programme in Latvia. VIAA, in its turn, as a programme implementer performs project evaluation, implementation monitoring and control. The scholarships activity contributes to higher education and research, reducing economic and social disparities in the European Economic Area, strengthening bilateral relations and promoting exchanges between donor countries and Latvia.
