In Liepaja youth discusses career choices in environmental fields online

On January 27, a youth discussion on environmental career choices and their perspectives were held by the Nature House of The Science and Education Innovation Centre (ZIIC) of the Liepaja Municipal Education Department. The debate was organized through the Zoom platform in cooperation with the Centre for Debate. The discussion is one of the activities of the project “Development of the Innovation Center in the City of Liepaja”, which is financed by the Norway grants.

Sixteen young people from four schools in Liepaja (Oskars Kalpaka Liepāja Secondary School No. 15, Liepāja Secondary School No. 5 of the Friendly Call, Jānis Čakste Secondary School No. 10 and Liepāja State 1st Gymnasium) attended the discussion. The discussion focused on career choices in environmental fields, encouraging young people to think about whether such a career path has a perspective and what the motivation might be to choose a professional future related to the environment. At the same time, students were encouraged to think about how global processes, such as pandemic caused by Covid-19 virus, rapid technological and scientific developments, and the global economic and political situation, affect young people’s career choices, especially in environmental professions.

In preparation for the discussion, young people were supported by four specialists – SIA “Liepājas ūdens” chemist-technologist Gunta Šneidere, “Liepājas RAS” environmental management specialist Laima Lapiņa, Rural Support Service geographical system information specialist Andra Beķere and Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Center researcher and the head of the student council Ilze Elbere. The involved professionals, who not only received education in one of the environmental fields but also practical work in positions in accordance with the acquired profession, gave the young people their practical experience in the discussion.

In the project “Development of the Innovation Centre in Liepaja City” ZIIC continues to improve the Nature House and co-creation space, which will fulfil the centre with modern exhibits, technologies and equipment, as well as new interest education programs. The project is planned to be implemented in a period of three years to promote the development of knowledge of pre-school children, pupils and teachers in the fields of STEM and the environment.
